Developing Crossword Anthology to Enhance Linguistic Ability

Abstract:
This paper reports the project creating anthology of crosswords puzzle to maintain or improve Semantic Verbal Fluency (henceforth: SVF). SVF is a contributor of communication skill both verbal and written which is very important for many graduates as well as employers. It is the ability to generate words on the basis of share meaning. Crossword puzzle is the most word puzzle that can be found easily in any daily newspaper or magazine. However, studies have revealed that crossword is not merely a game but also a tool to sharpen SVF and linguistic ability. It is believed that performing simple crossword on regular basis may improve SVF functioning. The anthology is developed for learners or people who want to have a non formal learning to support their linguistic ability. The project is carried out with the purpose of providing a source for informal learning and not formal learning as it happens in the classrooms. However, to achieve its aforementioned goal this anthology is to be used for regular activity. The crosswords practice help the intended users improve their linguistic ability by activating their cognitive faculties and functioning specific brain structure which play important role in language production.
