ABSTRACT:
Poetry, being an
art of words, can help students become more sensitive to language, their own
and other people’s. However, in an EFL situation students may object learning
poetry and put a poem as series of gorgeous noises to be funneled through one
ear and out the other without being allowed to trouble the mind. This is, of
course, is a narrowed view about poetry.
For EFL learners,
however, should not feel worry about understanding poetry. Not all poems are
difficult of course, and some can be understood and enjoyed on first seeing. Moreover,
what the matter the most is learning English through poem and not to learn
about the poem. In short, it is valuable for EFL learners to explore some poems
and write ones. Poetry gives abundance language exposures that automatically
improve students’ language sensitivity on vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation,
as well as students’ creativity in using their English.
